What Should I Pack for Board & Train? Checklist for Owners

A focused brown dog standing outdoors near greenery.

Getting your dog ready for a Board & Train program can be both exciting and a little overwhelming. You want to make sure they’re set up for a safe, comfortable, and successful stay while they learn and grow.

At Reliable Canine, we aim to make the transition as smooth as possible. Whether your dog is joining us for Puppy Fundamentals, On-Leash Obedience, Off-Leash Obedience, or Behavior Rehabilitation, this packing guide will help you feel prepared and confident for their stay.

The Essentials: What to Bring for Board & Train

When your dog stays with us for training, we provide most of the equipment and structure they need. However, there are a few personal items that help ensure comfort and a smooth transition into their stay. Please see the list below:

1. Food and Feeding Instructions
Please bring enough of your dog’s regular food for the entire duration of their stay, plus a few extra days just in case. Include:

  • Their current kibble or diet (no sudden changes)
  • Their current high-value treats for training
  • Any supplements
  •  Clear feeding instructions (amounts, frequency, and any restrictions), which must also be clearly filled out in your Board & Train intake form

Maintaining their normal diet helps prevent digestive upset and keeps their energy stable during training.

2. Leash and Collar
We use professional training equipment during programs; however, please send your dog’s regular leash and properly fitted flat collar for transport and daily handling comfort. If your dog currently uses a prong collar or e-collar, please include it. We will evaluate all training tools during their program to ensure they are appropriate and effective.

3. Comfort Items (Optional but Helpful)
A few familiar items can help your dog adjust more easily, such as:

  • A blanket or towel with your scent
  • One durable toy (no plush toys, please)
  • A safe chew for downtime (Benebone, Bully Sticks, etc)

Please avoid sending anything highly sentimental or easily damaged.

4. Medications
If your dog is on any medication, please make sure this has been clearly filled out in your Board & Train intake form. Additionally, include all medications in clearly labeled packaging with dosing instructions.

5. Vaccination Records
All dogs must be up to date on required vaccinations. Please ensure vaccination details have been clearly filled out in your Board & Train intake form.

What Not to Bring

To keep your dog safe and our facility organized, please do not pack the following:

  • Large bedding or beds (we provide appropriate bedding)
  • Bowls or feeding dishes (we sanitize and supply our own)
  • Crates or kennels (we will provide an appropriately sized crate)
  • Rawhide or high-risk chews
  • Expensive toys or personal belongings

We maintain a clean, secure environment — so your dog’s comfort and safety are always a top priority.

How to Prepare Before Drop-Off

To help make your dog’s transition as smooth as possible, we recommend a few simple steps:

  • Give your dog a nice walk before drop-off to help them settle
  • Avoid feeding a large meal right before drop-off
  • Pack all belongings in a clearly labeled bag or container
  • Make sure your dog has ID tags and is microchipped

What Happens During Board & Train

Your dog will live, learn, and train with us. Our Board & Train programs include:

  • Daily structured training sessions in real-life environments
  • Exercise, play, and socialization
  • Mental enrichment activities to build focus and confidence
  • Real-world field trips when appropriate
  • Rest and downtime, either in a structured resting space or crate as appropriate
  • Updates to keep you informed

By the end of the program, you can expect improved calmness, clearer communication, and more reliable obedience both on and off leash.

What Happens After Board & Train

Your dog’s training doesn’t stop when they go home. We make sure you feel confident handling everything they’ve learned at home. After the program includes:

  • A detailed go-home session to transfer training to you
  • Hands-on coaching so you understand handling, structure, and communication
  • Text and email support for ongoing questions and guidance
  • Follow-up training sessions included in select packages to support long-term success
  • Guidance on maintaining and continuing your dog’s progress at home

By the end of this phase, you’ll feel confident, clear, and supported in continuing your dog’s training in real-world life.

  • Private Sessions
  • Day Train
  • Board & Train
  • Boarding
  • Group Classes
  • Waivers
